Earth Day Giveaway, Day 2: Kikkerland Tree Friendly Recycled Pencils

Since 1992, the folks at Kikkerland Design have traveled the world in search of original designs for things that can make life more enjoyable.
The company hosts Design Challanges in which designers submit concepts which are rooted in their heritage for a chance to highlight difficult topics such as politics, illness or sustainability, while keeping the product cheerful and entertaining.
Starting in Philadelphia in 2009, the Kikkerland Design Challenges have taken place in Korea, China, Mexico and the Netherlands. These Challenges have accomplished multiple goals. They help introduce young designers to the international market, provide them a real-life experience in bringing a product to consumers and support the work of worthy local collaborators. The Challenges celebrate local design culture through the transmission of stories, in the form of contemporary objects, that have been passed down by generations. In the end, the Challenges are a win-win-win proposition for everyone involved.
“The preservation of the earth is vital to Kikkerland,” Daisuke van der Lande, marketing coordinator, says. “As a corporation, it is our passion to evoke awareness of the world and all the damage that Mother Nature has taken. Many of our products not only give back to different organizations, but the product themselves symbolize a message.”

Rhinos have become endangered through hunting and destruction of their natural habitats. Kikkerland would like the magnificent animals to be around for a long time to come. Hence these long lasting oversize erasers made from PVC-free TPR.
“Hopefully, every time someone used our Endangered Animal Erasers, they will be happy to read on the packaging they are contributing to the Center of Biodiversity, a great organization that fights against global warming and its effects on endangered species. Or when they purchase ZeCar , your money is directly contributed to a massive reforesting project we are very proud of, Project Mil Folhas.”
Daisuke says that he can write on and on about this project, but to keep it short the organization planted 300K trees with 150 different rare specimens! This enriched genetic bank invites new animals and tree species to thrive, and become a self-generating healthy habitat for all.
To celebrate Earth Day, Kikkerland is donating Tree Friendly Recycled Pencils valued at $6. Part of the Mexico Design Challenge 2011, Save the trees! We need them! Every time you remove a Tree Friendly Pencil from the pack you will be reminded of the deforestation that occurs for the things we take for granted. Luckily, no trees were harmed in the making of this product! Made from 100% recycled paper. This product was co designed with Andrea Roman
