This photo was taken at Sunken Meadow State Park (Long Island, NY). Sometimes I get so caught up in zig-zagging across the globe that I forget how beautiful nature can be, even in the midst of suburbia. Sunken Meadow in particular has always had a special meaning to me, as the beach that I frequented most often as a child and also as the place where I got my first real taste of the outdoors through nature camp every summer. From the boardwalk, you can also see the Stony Brook University Hospital, where I attended some of my undergraduate classes. I enjoy going back for bird-watching (there is an estuary in the park that attracts all sorts of birds) and to walk on the boardwalk during the spectacular sunsets.
